1. Prepare the Chicken:

Let’s start preparing the Glazed BBQ Chicken Breasts by preparing the chicken breasts.

  • Place the chicken breasts in a large bowl, drizzle with olive oil, and toss to coat.
  • In a small bowl, mix the smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
  • Sprinkle the rub all over the chicken.

2. Make the Glaze:

  • In a medium saucepan, whisk together — ketchup, brown sugar, honey, vinegar, Worcestershire, soy sauce, liquid smoke, and red pepper flakes— all glaze ingredients except for the cornstarch slurry.
  • Bring to a simmer over medium heat and cook for 5 minutes to meld the flavors.
  • Then whisk the cornstarch slurry into the sauce.
  • Continue to simmer for 1-2 more minutes, whisking, until the sauce thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon.
  • Remove from heat.

3. Cook the Chicken:

This recipe for Glazed BBQ Chicken Breasts has two cooking options: the oven method (recommended for the best glaze) and the grill method. Choose the one that best suits your preferences.

A. (Oven Method)

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Place a wire rack inside a foil-lined baking sheet.
  2. Initial Bake: Arrange the seasoned chicken breasts on the wire rack. Bake for 12-15 minutes.
  3. Layer the Glaze: Remove the chicken from the oven and brush a generous layer of glaze over all surfaces. Return to the oven and bake for 5 more minutes.
  4. Final Glaze & Finish: Brush on a final, thick layer of glaze. Bake for another 3-5 minutes, or until the chicken’s internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C) * and the glaze is bubbly.

B. Grill Method:

This method is for a smoky flavor.

  1. Preheat Grill: Preheat your grill to medium-high heat (about 400-450°F).
  2. Initial Grilling: Place the seasoned chicken breasts on the hot grill. Cook for 5-6 minutes per side, until the chicken is almost cooked through.
  3. Glaze and Finish: Reduce heat to medium. Brush a thick layer of glaze on the chicken. Flip, and glaze the other side. Continue to cook for another 2-4 minutes, flipping once more, until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C) * and the glaze is sticky and caramelized.

 

Tip:

For extra caramelization, cook for 1-2 minutes, watching constantly to prevent burning.

4. Rest and Serve Glazed BBQ Chicken Breasts:

  • Transfer the glazed chicken breasts to a clean cutting board and let them rest for 2-5 minutes (essential for keeping the chicken juicy).
  • Slice the chicken breasts against the grain and serve immediately with rice, potato wedges or baked potato.
* Check with a food thermometer to make sure that you have reached the minimum recommended safe serving temperature for poultry of 165°F.
