Cookie Dough

For Rolling

Directions:

1. Mixing the Dry and Wet Ingredients:

Let’s start with preparation of Classic Buttery Sugar Cookies by preparing the dough mixture.

  • In a medium bowl, sift together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Set this dry mixture aside.
  • In a large bowl (or stand mixer bowl), cream the softened butter and 1 ½ cups of sugar together on medium-high speed until the texture is light, fluffy, and pale yellow (about 3–4 minutes).
  • Add the egg and vanilla extract to the butter mixture, beating until well combined.
  • Scrape down the sides of the bowl to ensure even mixing.

2. Combining and Chilling:

  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients in three batches, mixing on low speed.
  • Mix only until the flour streaks disappear; do not overmix or the cookies will be tough.
  • Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or transfer the dough to an airtight container.
  • Chill in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour. This makes the dough easier to handle and prevents spreading.

3. Baking the Classic Buttery Sugar Cookies:

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  • Scoop about 1 tablespoon of dough and roll it into a smooth ball between your palms.
  • Roll the dough ball in the extra 3 tablespoons of sugar until fully coated.
  • Place balls on the prepared baking sheet, spaced about 2 inches apart.
  • Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, or until the edges are just barely golden brown.
  • The centers may still look slightly soft.
  • Remove from the oven and let them sit on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.

Best Served With

  • Ice Cold Milk: The classic pairing to balance the sweetness.
  • Fresh Berries and Whipped Cream: Creates a light, strawberry-shortcake style dessert.
  • Earl Grey Tea: The citrus notes of the tea complement the vanilla in the cookies.
