Tools:

Directions:

1. Activate the Yeast:

Let’s start the preparation of soft dinner rolls recipe by activating the yeast.

  • In a large mixing bowl (or the bowl of a stand mixer), combine the warm milk and sugar.
  • Sprinkle Active Dry Yeast over and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.

2. Combine Ingredients:

  • Add the melted butter and the egg to the milk mixture and whisk briefly.
  • Add about 2.5 cups of the flour (part of the total amount) and the salt.
  • Stir with a spoon or use the dough hook attachment on your mixer on low speed until a shaggy dough begins to form.

3. Knead the Dough:

By Hand: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead for about 8-10 minutes, adding the remaining ½ cup of flour gradually as needed to prevent sticking. The dough should become smooth, elastic, and only slightly tacky.

By Mixer: With the dough hook, knead on medium-low speed for 5-7 minutes, adding the remaining flour as needed. The dough should pull away from the sides and become smooth and elastic.

4. Rise:

  • Form the dough into a ball. Place the dough in the bowl and cover the bowl tightly with plastic wrap or a clean kitchen towel.
  • Let it rise in a warm, draft-free place for 60 to 90 minutes, or until doubled in size.

5. Shape the Rolls:

  • Lightly grease your 9×13 inch baking pan.
  • Gently punch down the risen dough to release the air.
  • Turn it out onto a very lightly floured surface.
  • Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces.
  • Roll each piece into a smooth ball.

6. Proof the Rolls:

  • Arrange the dough balls evenly in the prepared baking pan (they will be close together).
  • Let them rise again in a warm place for about 30 minutes, or until they look puffy (they won’t quite double this time).

7. Preheat and Bake:

  • While the rolls are proofing, preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Once proofed, bake the rolls for 15-20 minutes, or until they are golden brown on top and cooked through.

8. Finish Soft Dinner Rolls Recipe with Butter:

  • As soon as you remove the rolls from the oven, brush the tops generously with a little extra melted butter.
  • This gives them a lovely shine and keeps them soft.

9. Cool and Serve Soft Dinner Rolls Recipe:

  • Let the rolls cool in the pan for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack, or simply serve them warm directly from the pan.
