Directions:

1. Preparation of the Apple Filling:

Let’s start with the preparation of the Apple Crisp by preparing the apple filling.

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the sliced Granny Smith and Honeycrisp apples.
  • Add the brown sugar, all-purpose flour, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and ground cloves to the apples.
  • Drizzle with lemon juice and vanilla extract.
  • Gently toss everything together until the apples are evenly coated.
  • Spread the apple mixture in an even layer in a 9 x 13-inch baking dish.

2. Creating the Crunchy Topping:

  • In a separate medium mixing bowl, combine the old-fashioned rolled oats, all-purpose flour, brown sugar, chopped pecans, ground cinnamon, and salt.
  • Add the orange zest and stir to combine.
  • Cut in the cold, cubed butter using a pastry blender or two knives until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs with some pea-sized pieces of butter remaining.

3. Assembling and Baking Apple Crisp:

  • Evenly sprinkle the prepared topping over the apple filling in the baking dish.
  • Place the baking dish on a baking sheet to catch any potential drips.
  • Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the fruit is bubbly and tender, and the topping is golden brown and crisp.
  • Remove from the oven and let it cool for at least 10-15 minutes before serving. This will allow the filling to set slightly.
  • Serve warm and enjoy your delicious homemade apple crisp!
